Event description

Description

On Friday, March 1 at 7pm, join Cary Institute for a presentation by sustainability expert Ruth DeFries, a professor at Columbia University and a recipient of the MacArthur ‘genius’ Grant.

DeFries will discuss her book, The Big Ratchet, an optimistic exploration of the adaptability and resiliency of people. Our species long lived on the edge of starvation. We now produce enough food for all 7 billion of us to eat nearly 3,000 calories every day.

Discover the leaps in knowledge and technology that have allowed us to wrestle unprecedented amounts of food and energy from the Earth. And learn lessons from nature’s persistence that could help humanity continue to prosper in a complex world.

The event will be held in the Cary Institute auditorium. Registration for general admission is required; seating is first come, first served. Registration does not guarantee a seat inside the auditorium. Books will be available for purchase from Merritt Bookstore.

Aldo Leopold Society members may contact Vicki Doyle for reserved seating at (845) 677-7600 x203 or doylev@caryinstitute.org.
