What is the Big Latch On?
Groups of breastfeeding women coming together at registered locations around the world to all latch on their child at a set time. All the children are latched on for one minute at the set time and are counted by the witnesses. The numbers are added up and we see if we can beat previous Big Latch On record set in 2015 when 14,889 women and their children came together and breastfed simultaneously as part of the Big Latch On.
History of the Big Latch On
The Big Latch On is originally from New Zealand. It was started by Women's Health Action in 2005 as part of World Breastfeeding Week. Each year, they have seen a growth in the numbers of breastfeeding women attending and an increase in the support for breastfeeding in public. The Big Latch On was introduced to Portland, Oregon, in 2010 by Joanne Edwards as a celebration for World Breastfeeding Week. In 2011, Joanne worked with Annie Brown and members of La Leche League USA to grow the Big Latch On across the USA.
Women's Health Action and the Big Latch On Global Coordinator Joanne Edwards of Small Beginnings Group, LLC joined forces in 2012.
The Global Big Latch On is now coordinated by the Big Latch On Founders: Women’s Health Action and by Small Beginnings Group, LLC DBA Global Big Latch On. You can read more about organizational structure on our website.
Why have a Big Latch On?
We all know how important breastfeeding is and this way we can show everyone just how much we all value breastfeeding and support all mamas as they raise the next generation. Plus it's a good way to spend time with other mothers and have a lot of fun, maybe some coffee and donuts as well!
World Breastfeeding Week
"World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August in more than 175 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration made by WHO and UNICEF policy-makers in August 1990 to protect, promote and support breastfeeding"
