Description

The benefits of physical activity and approaches to promotion: A case study of the ‘Live Active’ exercise referral scheme.

Synopsis:-

Regular physical activity has many health benefits, from reduced risk of chronic health conditions to improved quality of life. There are also secondary prevention benefits for people with established health conditions. Despite wide acceptance of the benefits, many adults in the UK are insufficiently active, and people with chronic health conditions are even less likely to be active.

This seminar will address the benefits of physical activity, as well as the challenges and approaches to promotion, at the population level and in those with health conditions. It will draw upon my doctoral study, which explores the impact of participation in an exercise referral scheme in Tameside, for people with chronic health conditions. Schemes such as ‘Live Active’ support people with chronic health conditions to become more active in order to improve their health, offering specialist support and tailored physical activity programs. However, the evidence base underpinning the effectiveness of these schemes is poor, requiring further research in to which schemes are effective and in what way. Challenges in the evaluation of exercise referral schemes will be discussed, as well as the outcomes to date of a mixed methods evaluation of the ‘Live Active’ scheme, which aims to evaluate the scheme in a more holistic manner, examining the impact on both traditional and adjunct outcomes.
