Event description

Description

Sofia Coppola adapts Thomas Cullinan’s novel about a wounded Union soldier stranded at a girls school in Virginia towards the end of the Civil War as a claustrophobic chamber piece. Coppola’s frames are overfilled with verdant vegetation and lush greenery encircles the characters, forcing them ever closer together. Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst lead a strong cast of actors at once attracted and repulsed by Colin Farrell’s maimed Corporal McBurney.

A Q&A with cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, moderated by Claudia Puig, follows the screening.

The Beguiled. 2017. USA. Directed by Sofia Coppola. 93 min. Courtesy of Focus Features.
