About this event
While most popular art styles through the past millennia took decades or centuries to catch on, Bauhaus only took around 15 years. What was it about this early 20th century modern style hailing from the legendary Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany that led to its proliferation around the world? And how did it use a combination of specialized workshops and experimental teaching philosophies to resonate with some of the most innovative artists of the era? It's time to explore how Bauhaus influenced so many aspects of the world around us, and how the style continues to flourish internationally a century later.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series that explores the history and legacy of the Bauhaus — while only in operation between 1919 and 1933, this German art school was not only an incubator for the Modernism movement, but also continues to influence design in all aspects of modern living throughout the world. In Part Three — Theater, Graphic, and Media Art — we'll examine the Bauhaus School’s innovative approach to the more modern fields of art, often used as functional tools, but also independently leading to new art mediums.
Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this art-centric virtual journey will feature:
- A look at the early Graphic Art Workshop and its publications of artist portfolios, advertisement posters, and postcards
- Herbert Bayer’s innovative design approach including modern fonts
- A discussion of the Bauhaus development of advertising and catalog design, as well as exhibition design
- Images of Bauhaus photography, which were not only used as a teaching tool or for documentary purposes, but also as a new fine art medium — with and without camera or as part of photomontage
- Early experimentations with abstract film
- Major productions of the Theater Workshop, a birthplace of modern performance art, including Oskar Schlemmer's Triadic Ballet
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about the Bauhaus are welcomed and encouraged!
