Event description

Description

SBJ, an organization named for dance pioneer Dr. Sherill B. Johnson, was established in 2014 out of the need for more specific and dedicated dance training for youth as the conservators of African culture.

The Baobab is designed for boys and girls ages 4-13 of all skill levels. Session 4.5 is an abbreviated term with 3 intense training workshops. Each workshop is 1-1.5 hours long.

For the first time, the students will be seperated into groups that will meet at different times. This will allow each group to get more specific attention and in-depth direction.

Group 1: Ages 4-7

Group 2: Ages 8-13

Each term is dedicated to 1 rhythm. Students learn the history, purpose and traditional context of rhythms and the accompanying dances and songs, paying specific attention to traditional African dance form and deliberate movement. There is also a focus on the language and geography.
