Fair Housing and the Olmstead Decision

with

Amy Nelson, Executive Director

Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana

October 22, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. (EST)

Most are aware of the US Supreme Court decision, Olmstead v. L.C., which affirmed the right of persons with disabilities to live in the most integrated settings instead of in segregated institutions. In this webinar, hear about how the Olmstead decision applies in housing. Hear about HUD guidance and recent cases challenging the lack of community based settings by states. Understand the implications for Indiana’s investments in affordable housing and home & community based supports for persons with disabilities.

Speaker:Amy Nelson brings eighteen years of experience in fair housing to the topic of the impact of Olmstead on housing. Under her leadership, the Fair Housing Centers in North and South Dakota had a number of groundbreaking cases addressing housing discrimination against those with disabilities, families with children and sexual harassment against women. In Virginia, she worked as the Director of Systemic Investigations and Enforcement at Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) of Richmond, VA. There her work focused on addressing systemic lending discrimination against minorities, rental discrimination against those with disabilities and discriminatory advertising. Ms. Nelson is the first Executive Director of the first non-profit fair housing center in Indiana.

Moderator:  Deborah McCarty, Executive Director of the Back Home in Indiana Alliance
