Event description

Description

Healthcare professionals, please join us at the next Medical Ethics Forum Event at the Sheridan Study Center. The Charlie Gard Case included controversial ethical issues for treating an infant with a rare mitochondrial disease. His parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, wanted to bring him to the United States for experimental treatment, but the British hospital charged with Charlie’s medical care, wanted to remove his life support.

A months-long legal battle between the parents and the hospital ensued. By the time the UK court allowed testimony from one of the US experts that agreed to perform the experimental treatment, Charlie’s condition had deteriorated too much for the treatment to have any chance of success.

This case study will examine larger issues such as the tension between parents and practitioners, tensions between legal and ethical questions and other related life issues.

Speaker: Katarina Lee, J.D., M.A., Clinical Ethics Fellow, Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Baylor College of Medicine
