Event Details

The Atlantic Meets the Pacific is enhanced by exclusive “insider” visits to groundbreaking reserach labs and innovation centers in and around San Diego. As a registered attendee, you have the opportunity to tour one of the five labs listed above. Descriptions of each lab tour are included below. Note: There are only twenty (20) available slots for each lab, so please reserve your spot quickly. Reservations will be honored on a first-come first-serve basis. If an attendee does not select a lab tour, one will be selected for them.

Lab Tour Schedule:

2:00 PM: Attendees board shuttles for transportation to the lab tour locations

2:45 PM: Shuttles arrive at the lab locations and tours begin

2:45 - 3:45 PM: Lab tour experiences

3:45 PM: Attendees board shuttles for transporation back to the Scripps Seaside Forum

4:30 PM: Shuttles arrive back at Scripps Seaside Forum for evening programming

La Jolla Playhouse

Tour Topic: Innovation in Theatre
 
The nationally-acclaimed, Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse is known for its tradition of creating some of the most exciting and adventurous new work in regional theatre. The Playhouse was founded in 1947, and is considered to be one of the most well-respected not-for-profit theatres in the country. The tour will include unique theatrical experiences, including: the immersive environment of Platonov in a world premiere adaptation by M.I.T.’s Jay Scheib, an exploration of the life of a star in Our Star Will Die Alone by UCSD’s Project Planetaria, and a fascinating analysis of our city in 100% San Diego.
 
Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute

Tour Topic: Drug Discovery and Drug Repurposing
 
With its mantra, “From Research, the Power to Cure,” Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute conducts world-class collaborative research into the molecular causes of disease. The resulting breakthroughs are directly translated into new medicines that save lives and improve human health. The Institute was founded in 1976 to investigate the developmental biology underlying cancer. Less than 40 years later, Sanford-Burnham has major research programs in cancer; neuroscience, aging, and stem cells; diabetes and obesity; infectious and inflammatory diseases; and childhood diseases.
 
Scripps Institution of Oceanography:

Tour Topic: Studying the Oceans: Climate Change & Drug Discovery 
 
UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean, Earth and atmospheric science research, education, and public service in the world. Their research spans the realms of sea, air, land, and life in efforts to determine how Earth systems work and interact. Among the hundreds of research programs under way at Scripps, many are multidisciplinary, linking discoveries in one subject to advances in other studies. Lab tours at Scripps will focus on conservation strategies, drug discovery from the oceans, and the global stressors on the environment.

 
The Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine

Tour Topic: Stem Cell Research – Witness Science as it Happens
 
The Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, a stem cell research facility, was founded with the mission of creating multi-disciplinary scientific collaborations. Collaboration is vital to scientific progress, and at Sanford Consortium, bright minds come together every day to invent research tools and technologies that hasten the pace of stem cell research. Scientists at Sanford Consortium are discovering and developing diagnostics, therapies, and cures that will relieve human suffering from chronic disease and injury. 

 

The Scripps Research Institute

Tour Topic: Genomics, Cardiology, and Wireless Health

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is one of the world’s largest independent, nonprofit research organizations focusing on research in the biomedical sciences. TSRI’s philosophy emphasizes the creation of basic knowledge in the biosciences for its application in medicine, the pursuit of fundamental scientific advances through interdisciplinary programs, and collaborations. Participants will have the opporunity to visit the laboratories of Dr. Eric Topol, where researchers are focusing on the areas of genomics, wireless sensors, preventative cardiology, coronary artery disease, and preventative medicine.
