Educators will come away from this session with a deeper understanding of SL and the Arts at DePaul and in Chicago, as well as with tools they might employ to create SL assignments and courses. Students, faculty, and community partners will share successes and challenges from current courses, providing participants with specific models of simultaneous deep learning and meaningful contribution to the community. Participants will reflect with their colleagues on why they might adopt (or further) a SL approach; utilize a course planning template to begin to draft their own assignment, course, or program; and network with community partners and colleagues to further their work.
At the end of the workshop participants will:
• Summarize the basic features of a service learning course.
• Design an arts or literature assignment to add to a class.
• Design an arts or literature service learning course.
