Description

The Artistic World of Histology

Welcome to a peek into the art and science of histology – an exploration of the microanatomy of cells and their affiliated tissues. A variety of specialized stains are used to help us visualize their component parts. Histology provides a much needed and powerful tool to study both normal and abnormal structures and functions.

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the basics of histology, make their own “wet mounts”, and have an opportunity to observe a variety of prepared specimens. By linking together practices inherent to both art and science, participants will create their own watercolor illustrations, and create digital photographs of select specimens that can be translated into those of both aesthetic and functional purposes.

Dr. Gillian Bayne's research interests involve improving teaching and learning in science education through the use of cogenerative dialogues and coteaching at the high school, undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Bayne is an Associate Professor of Science Education and a program coordinator in the Middle and High School Education Department at CUNY's Lehman College. With over twenty-five years of science teaching experience in both New York City public and private schools – at the high school and university levels, she combines her expertise and commitment to excellence with innovative teaching philosophies and practices in order to create greater possibilities for students and teachers as they embark on the complex journey that is science education. Dr. Bayne grounds her work primarily in cultural sociology, the sociology of emotions and face-to-face interactions.
