The Art of Travel and Street Photography

About this Event

Join Dave to learn the art of making truly compelling Travel and Street-style photographs. This goes well beyond gear and camera settings and into mindset, confidence, style, composition, timing and storytelling. We then venture out to practice!

Topics include:

  • Review of collected world-class Street and Travel photographs
  • Ideas for visual storytelling

  • Benefit of forming intention 
  • Timing, Anticipation the Decisive Moment
  • Designing the frame

  • Engaging the subject vs. candid observation
  • Handling a fear
 of approaching strangers
  • Tipping or not
  • Capturing action and feeling
 
  • Techniques for making engaging street portraits
  • Encountering and handling lighting scenarios

  • Researching locations / where and when
  • What I carry, travel tips & gear recommendations
  • Join us for a practice shoot at Seattle Center!

What to Bring

  • A DSLR, rangefinder or Mirrorless camera that you are familiar with.
  • 1 or 2 prime lenses, (such as 35, 50 or 85mm equivalent), or a general zoom lens
  • Notepad or Tablet to make notes as audio-video recording is not possible.
  • Dress for an outing in the predicted weather. Bring snacks if you’ll need them.

David shoots exclusively with the Fujifilm X mirrorless system. We will have a small selection of Fujifilm cameras and lenses on hand for attendees to try. If you want to use one of the cameras, please be sure to bring an empty SD memory card that we can erase and format.

About Dave Julian

Dave Julian is a Seattle-based photographer. Between editorial, travel and corporate assignments, he runs workshops privately in the Palouse, Cuba, Europe, India, and at Santa Fe Workshops and Maine Media Workshops. His articles have appeared in Outside, National Geo Traveler, Islands, SHOTS, Outdoor Photographer, Digital Photo Pro, FujiLove and he guest hosts the podcast "Hit the Streets”. Dave teaches at Seattle Central's Creative Academy and is lead instructor for the University of Washington Photography Certificate Program.
