Description

"The Art of the Murky Deal: Russian Gangsterism and the Trump Presidency"

This talk will look at how the collapse of the Soviet Union gave rise to a global kleptocracy that helped bring both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump to power. On the basis of three decades of research in Russia, including some work on the Russian mafia, Nancy Ries will provide a roadmap for understanding the practices and goals of the conspiratorial networks that arose after the fall of communism. What tools do democratic societies have to counteract the impacts of gangster-style politics?

Nancy Ries is Professor of Anthropology and Peace and Conflict Studies at Colgate University. Her specialty is contemporary Russia. She is fluent in Russian and has done extensive field research in Moscow and other cities since the 1980s. Among her publications are the 1997 book, Russian Talk: Culture and Conversation during Perestroika. She has written about economic survival after the collapse of the Soviet system, and state corruption and the Russian mafia. She is currently researching the Kremlin's nuclear saber-rattling after the takeover of Crimea.
