This 6-weeks class will provide students with a fundamental understanding of book arts that they can continue to build upon throughout their career. Students will learn five distinct book structures and the historical use of each. The book structures range from the most simple pamphlet stitch to the complicated flat back closed cover, which is what most people picture when they think the word “book.” The class will cover the basics of using several different materials including leather, decorative paper, PVA glue, book cloth, and linen thread. Students will learn good bookmaking habits and studio etiquette that apply to book making as well as paper handling.
Class meets one day a week (Mondays, 10am-1pm) for 6 consecutive weeks
