Event description

Description

My people will sleep for 100 years but when they awake it wil lbe the artists who give them their spirit back - Louis Riel

I don't think there can be radical social change without art - Angela Davis

In the midst of all the issues and struggles our city and country is facing. In the polarization that takes place in our society...

  • How can we help people see and feel the issues more closely?
  • How can we change people's perceptions and help them understand the nuances and complexities in the human realities behind all the struggles?

Art in its many forms through its many vessels continues to have a way to not simply call out what's wrong and broken but also inspire what's possible

Trellis invites you to this forum where you will be able to hear from artist and organizations addresss justice through art.

This will be an opportunity to meet other artists, see, celebrate and support their work and through their labors learn to see the world differently.

The artist and organizations you'll hear from include...

SEA DOG THEATER

Sea Dog Theater is interested in stories where the experience of alienation and the struggle for reconciliation intersect. All great plays explore these questions to some degree, but certain plays address these realities with greater compassion and understanding. We produce new and established work.

THE SHELTER NYC

The Shelter is more than a theatre company. We are a community. The core of our community is our weekly Shelter Sunday workshop— the creative home to some of theatre’s most exciting writers, directors and actors. Shelter Sunday is a vibrant and galvanizing playground for our artists. It breeds collaborations and creative collisions, and it’s also the epicenter for our play development and production process. Since 2009, Shelter Artists, along with our all-volunteer staff, have created and staged over 100 world premieres.

GROUNDSWELL NYC

Groundswell brings together artists, youth, and community organizations through our Scaffold Up! model to use art as a tool for social change, for a more just and equitable world. Our projects beautify neighborhoods, engage youth in societal and personal transformation, and give expression to ideas and perspectives that are underrepresented in the public dialogue.

THRIVE COLLECTIVE

Thrive Collective mobilizes students, parents, artists, and community stakeholders to partner with public schools for transformational change. We function both as a matchmaker and direct service provider of arts and mentoring programs that cultivate the character and competencies necessary for students to thrive in today’s world.

ARTS GOWANUS

Arts Gowanus is a not-for-profit organization working to support, promote, and advocate for local artists and a sustainable arts community
