About this event

The Art of Group Conversation is a unique dialogue process that quickly establishes rapport and builds trust. It is based on memory matching and storytelling that reveal our “shared experiences instead of ideas and opinions.” “As we imagine another’s experience, we can more easily identify with each other instead of judging, and meaningful connections are made.

Dr. Rachel Davis DuBois developed this method in the 1930s and used it in settings ranging from PTAs to post-war Germany and the Civil Rights Movement. She also developed “Living Room Gatherings” which used the Art of Group Conversation and the humanities to unite residents of a geographical area. This method has stood the test of time as evidenced by its successful rebirth in 2021.

About the Facilitators

Russanne Bucci is a member of the Colaborative and the Project Director of the Art of Group Conversation. Bucci had the opportunity to assist Dr. DuBois when she was in her 90s, and to study the dialogue method through taped interviews and six books written by DuBois. Bucci is grateful to be able to share a bridge building tool at a time of great division.

Russanne Bucci earned her Bachelors in Social Sciences from the University of Michigan and her Masters of Science in Education and Intercultural Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work as an interculturalist includes community organizing, radio production (NPR), and teaching and training.

Delores Lyons is a facilitator with the Art of Group Conversation and formerly worked as a social worker and as a television news reporter. She is a social justice advocate and volunteers with an international grass-roots citizen lobby called RESULTS. This organization lobbies Congress on poverty issues. She is part of RESULTS' BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Committee and sits on the organization's Anti-Oppression Council.

Delores is on the Advisory Board of the interfaith organization W.I.S.D.O.M. (Women's Interfaith Solutions for Dialogue and Outreach in Metro Detroit) and helps to produce monthly webinar discussions on race.
