What is this?
This is a 1 day hands on training event run by Joseph Wilk.
Who is it for?
Developers and testers who want to learn how to use Cucumber.
Knowing some Ruby will help as we will focus on Ruby examples with Cucumber.
What is it about?
This will not just be a workshop with 8 hours of looking at the Cucumber tool. Cucumber is the easy part of the problem, the workshop provides an introduction to Cucumber so it is as accessible to as many people as possible. We will also be digging around the edges of Cucumber, looking more broadly to what Gojko Adzic refers to as Specification by Example. And one of the real challenges with Cucumber, scaling it.
Cucumber is easy to pickup but its a tool which provides you with very little guidance and provides an unfamiliar association linking methods and plain text through global regular expressions. From my experience lots of people are using Cucumber but very few people are using it well and that's what I want to address.
The course outline will follow:
Module 1: Cucumber basics and Cucumber advanced functionaility
Learn everything you need to start using Cucumber and uncover some of the less well known features.
Module 2: Where does Cucumber fit in the software life cycle.
Examples from Songkick.com of how Cucumber can fit into software development. Looking at real examples, following a feature from inception to delivery.
Module 3: Cucumber Patterns from the trenches
Patterns which can help provide better seperation of the UI, reduce the maintaince burden of step definitions, help balance different levels of abstraction and many more.
What do I need?
You will get most out of the session if you bring a laptop along.
