Description

The Art of Conversation

Join us in Mansion House's illustrious State Room for this after hours event which illuminates the world of salon culture that lit up York's Lord Mayor's House in the Georgian era.

How did ladies and gentlemen greet each other? What did they talk about? How did handheld objects encourage personal connection before social media?

This interactive event will show you how the Georgians shook up the rigid rules of the aristocracy by creating lively and entertaining evenings through face-to-face conversation. Your evening begins with a complimentary glass of fizz upon arrival in Mansion House's glorious state room, which is adorned with portraits of York's leading Georgian residents.

Learn from experts Professor Jon Mee and Dr Chloe Wigston Smith, from the University of York, about what made conversation tick in the eighteenth century. The answers may surprise you!

You'll discover the sumptuous soirees held by Mansion House resident Harriet Lane Fox, who was known to admire and entertain foreign opera singers. You'll take home a copy of one of Harriet's personal recipes for soiree success.

Ticket includes a glass of fizz. Doors open at 5:30pm. The conversation starts at 6pm.
