Description

We continue our Fall President's Class THE ART OF LIVING series with The Art of Being Alone and Together: Solitude and Society.

Pascal wrote: “All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone” (Pensées 139). And yet there are certainly miseries in being together in society. Navigating solitude and society is one of the most difficult aspects of living at all, not to mention living well. A life without solitude is a life without deep examination; a life removed from society is a life without deep engagement with the other. In this lecture and discussion, we explore the nature of the relationship between the individual and society and how to navigate between the two.

Greg Salyer, PhD, is President of the University of Philosophical Research and has been a teacher and administrator in higher education for almost twenty-five years. He has a Ph.D. in Literary Theory, Contemporary Literature, and Religious Studies from Emory University’s Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts and has taught in many venues, from small liberal arts colleges to a major research university, and also online since 2000.
