The Arizona Winds will ring in the Christmas season with its annual Christmas concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 4th. Midwestern University will once again host the band and, as they did last year to accommodate their ever-growing audience, the band will perform in the University’s 2,000 hall in the center of the campus. Volunteers will be posted in the parking lot and on campus to help direct patrons to the auditorium. Groups arriving by bus can drop patrons off at the auditorium entrance. A map of the campus is available on line at www.azwinds.com. Midwestern University is located at 19555 N. 59th Avenue in Glendale just south of Loop 101. The main entrance to campus is off of Utopia Rd. Make a right turn from the main entrance, follow the road to the north end of the east parking lot and park in or near the parking garage. Admission is free and open to the public.
“This year’s musical theme is ‘A Christmas Carol Fantasy,’ appropriately named to reflect the diverse range of very unique arrangements of familiar Christmas carols with some interesting musical twists,” stated the band’s Music Director and Conductor, retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Rich Shelton. “One of the highlights of the program we are very excited to present is a fabulous work titled A Nutcracker Fantasy which captures the essence of the entire ballet in a real tour de force arrangement,” continued Colonel Shelton, Another very interesting arrangement, Minor Alterations: Christmas Through the Looking Glass, takes some old favorite like “Jolly Old Saint Nick”, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, ”Silver Bells”, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”, and “Deck the Halls”, and transposes them into minor keys. “You may never listen to those Christmas tunes the same way again,” said Colonel Shelton.
Other works on the concert include Hark! Those Jingle Bells are Smokin’, Festival Fanfare for Christmas, A Christmas Fantasia, Rhapsody on Christmas Carols, and even an arrangement of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star like you’re never heard before! The concert will conclude with a Christmas carol sing-a-long, a traditional audience favorite. “We have plenty of room, so bring your family and friends and give your Christmas spirit a kick start for the season”, added Colonel Shelton.
