Event description

Description

The Anatomy of Presence, Posture and Power: an embodied anatomy class.

Reverse the effects of too much sitting!

This class is a gentle and natural exploration of your own structure using movement, self-massage, and guided body meditations. You will take home a better understanding of your own body and how to live in it in a more balanced, empowered way.

Got low back, knee, neck or shoulder pain? Come and learn simple, gentle tricks to relieve these and other common postural problems.

This class is good for anyone who is experiencing chronic joint pain or postural problems. If you would like to understand your own anatomy better--in a way that lets you do something about it--this class is for you.

New anatomical science makes many common joint and postural disorders unnecessary!

Based on the anatomy of the sitting disease epidemic, exercise and rehabilitation science, somatic psychology, and the exciting neuroscience of trauma, you will learn how to correct your posture and find power from within.

Each class is a 90 minute exploration of ideas, movement, and your own structure. Wear loose clothing and be ready to learn with your ears, heart and your muscles!

Each class will be comprehensive and self-contained, but will also have a focus on a key area. Please take one class or the series.
Sat 12/14: The neck/arm complex: fixing the slouch.
Mon 1/6: The low back and hips.
Sat 1/18: Your feet and the new deep core.

All bodies welcome.

Topics

-------------
Muscle meditation
The mind muscle connections is a staple of bodybuilding. Here, we take it much farther in a muscle-based exploration of the inner self. By focusing attention on our muscle, we can reverse the atrophy that results from sedentarism and at the same time find deep agency and meaning. We will explore a power pose, a simple standing meditation that will help us find grounding, alignment, and balance in our deep structure.

-------------
The new deep core
Learn about the deep core and how to tone it with every step you take. The deep core is a new concept proposed by anatomical research by Tom Meyers (Anatomy Trains), that helps us to understand how we are connected head to toe and how to create better stability and power from within.

----------------
The sitters antidote stretch
Learn the sitters antidote stretch that you can do anytime and anywhere. It will return vitality and openness to your body after a long period of sitting. This simple stretch is easy to do standing, leaning against your car after a long drive, or against a wall at the office.

----------------

We will explore three key areas of anatomy:

The neck/arm complex:
Learn how to cure the slouch and relieve neck pain by wearing your arms on your back, in the scapulas. Raise the hands to naturally lift the chest and head. This breaks the fatigue cycle by returning tone and balance to the muscles of the upper back and neck.

The low back/hip complex:
Relieve low back tightness and hip pain through bringing awareness to the muscles of the groin. The groin or anterior pelvis opposes and balances the posterior pelvis and low back and is often weakened and atrophied due to sitting.

The feet and the new deep core:
Find better stability and grounding for your self in the tripod of the foot. Return awareness to the big toe to help relieve many common forms of hip and knee pain. Tone the deep core with every step you take when you connect the big toe to the groin and through it to the deep pelvis.

Jim Freda LMT MA is a structural bodyworker and educator with a practice in Milwaukie Oregon. Jim is an experienced powerlifter and combines his clinical understanding of joint disorders with his understanding of sport science, together with his research on the new epidemiology of the sitting disease epidemic. He teaches these same ideas and simple tricks to his clients in the clinic and the gym.
