Event description

Description

We will dive into the vision, cosmology and plans for one of the most ambitious initiatives in the Amazon: to secure permanent protection for this critical region of the Amazon rainforest in the Headwaters of the Amazon in Ecuador and Peru.

The region is composed of 30 million hectares of ancestral territories of more than 20 indigenous nations, containing the most biologically diverse terrestrial ecosystem on Earth. These rainforests are critical carbon sinks and help to stabilize our global climate and rainfall and yet, they are facing a chronic and ever increasing risk from extractive industries.

The Amazon Sacred Headwaters Initiative seeks to forge a new, post-carbon model for the region, off-limits to industrial-scale resource extraction and where fossil fuels are left in the ground.

SPEAKERS:

Domingo Peas Nampichkai, Achuar Leader from CONFENIAE (indigenous organization of the Ecuadorian Amazon) and other indigenous delegates

Atossa Soltani, Director of Global Strategy, Amazon Sacred Headwaters Initiative

Tzeporah Berman, International Program Director, STAND.earth

Carlos Larrea, Economist, Universidad de Andina

Lizardo Cauper, President, AIDESEP (Peruvian national indigenous rights organization)
