Description

“Babies thrive out-of-doors. They sleep better, eat better, look better, play better, and learn better.”- Magda Gerber- Founder of Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE)

The Aishling Forest School’s “Foundations in Forest School” pilot program aims for that *sparkle* in the eye in both little learner and their caretaker. While being 100% immersed in nature, a space is made where the qualities of being lead to meaningful doing.

We believe, and research supports; connection to nature creates a foundation from which healthy human functioning and learning flow. Through Nature Connection, little learners and caretakers alike feel freer and more supported to express who they really are and what they really feel.

Our Foundations in Forest School season offers little learners (ages 0-3 years) and their caretakers an opportunity to come together each week in the greatest classroom of all: nature. Our 8-week, 90-min weekly pilot season will include:

  • An Oakiwear rainsuit (for your little learner to keep- sizing starts at 12 months)
  • 100% nature immersion and free play for little learners and caretakers at our home in the woods
  • Nature connection opportunities for our caretakers, as we invite them to: awaken sensory awareness, cultivate knowledge of place and restore the bond between learner and nature. We will utilize the “Coyote Guide’s” eight “Indicators of Awareness” to guide us through our journey to connect with each other, nature and ourselves.
  • Lively discussion and insights about mamahood, life with a little learner, nature connection, adventure and community
  • Circle time, songs and poems
  • A wholesome and nourishing homemade snack that we prepare and share together. In this way, caregivers and leaders work together to provide a model of what community means for little learners.
  • A handmade Nature Journal and opportunities to express art and to reflect

There are TWO season time-slots available: 9:30-11:00am and 1:00-2:30pm. Please choose your preferred time slot when you register.

The 8-week season will begin on Friday, March 22nd and will end on Friday, May 10th. The discounted cost for the entire pilot program is $320.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF FOREST SCHOOL:

“Let Nature be your teacher.” – William Wordsworth

Forest Schools are distinguished by their commitment to 100% outdoor time and complete nature immersion, unstructured flow learning, child inspired emergent curriculum, place-based focus, inquiry-based teaching style and authentic play. Nature immersion is defined as “Unstructured free time in nature resulting in an intimate, deep and personal connection to the natural world.”

This approach draws on, in addition to the Scandinavian outdoor model of friluftsliv (“free open-air life”), the learning theories and playful child-centered pedagogy of thinkers such as Rudolf Steiner and Maria Montessori, and on the nature-based education activities of Kurt Han and the British Scouting and Woodcraft Folk movements, among other influences.

THE AISHLING FOREST SCHOOL KEY PRINCIPLES:

Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children’s health (and also, by the way, in our own).” – Richard Louv

  • Total nature immersion regardless of the weather or season. Nature immersion is defined as unstructured free time in nature resulting in an intimate, deep and personal connection to the natural world.
  • Interest-led Flow Learning
  • Reggio-inspired Emergent Curriculum
  • Place-based Education
  • Inquiry-based Teaching Style
  • Positive Reinforcement, Conscious and Respectful Behavioral Approach
  • Emphasis on Individual Empowerment and Group Bonding
  • Respect and Empathy for Others, Self and the Living Earth
  • Small Class Sizes
  • Low Leader: Student Ratio

All sessions are designed and led by a Level 3 certified Forest School leader and qualified staff and volunteers. Each session is learner led and learners are given the freedom and responsibility to explore their interests and therefore initiate and direct their own learning.

THE AISHLING FOREST SCHOOL “INDICATORS OF AWARENESS”:

“Nature does not rush, yet everything is accomplished.”- Lao Tzu

The “Coyote’s Guide to Connection to Nature” utilizes “Indicators of Awareness” as both symptoms of successful learning and learning goals. Here, we’ll organize them through association with the direction of the Natural Cycle. Each week, we will begin to better understand and nourish each of the following Indicators:

  • East: Common Sense
  • Southeast: Aliveness and Agility
  • South: Inquisitive Focus
  • Southwest: Caring and Tending
  • West: Service to the Community
  • Northwest: Awe and Reverence
  • North: Self-Sufficiency
  • Northeast: Quiet Mind

THE MANY BENEFITS OF FOREST SCHOOL:

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” – Rachel Carson

Forest School is suited to all ages and abilities. The aim of Forest School is to develop the learner holistically and at their own pace. The benefits of this holistic, learner-led approach can be transferred to the classroom where children are found to be more motivated and able to concentrate more effectively.

Researched benefits of Forest School include:

  • Are less likely to come down with common infections, since they spend little time inside, where viruses and bacteria thrive
  • Have better motor skills, such as agility, balance and coordination
  • Increased ability to perceive and manage risk
  • Engage in more imaginative and dynamic forms of play
  • Are less likely to be overweight or obese
  • See improvements in confidence, social skills, language and communication, motivation and concentration
  • Become more resilient
  • Experience positive emotions, restorative effects and lowered stress levels as compared to a conventional indoor school
  • Heightened self-awareness, understanding and respect of themselves and the natural world
