Speaker: Paula Ludewig, PhD, PT
Paula Ludewig, PhD, PT, FAPTA is a Professor at the University of Minnesota in the Program in Physical Therapy. She received her MA in Physical Therapy and PhD in Exercise Science from the University of Iowa. Her initial Physical Therapy degree is from the College of St. Scholastica. Her research and teaching interests are in the area of orthopaedic biomechanics, with particular interest in mechanisms of injury and rehabilitation approaches for the shoulder. Dr. Ludewig has published numerous articles on shoulder biomechanics and rehabilitation, and has presented her research work and continuing education nationally and internationally.
Additional speakers: TBD
Shoulder pain and dysfunction are very common in the elderly. This course will incorporate recent advances in understanding of normal shoulder biomechanics and mechanisms of shoulder pain and dysfunction with application toward assessment and treatment of the painful aging shoulder. The course will include lecture presentation on natural history of the aging shoulder, common movement deviations associated with common pathologies in aging, common surgical procedures, and targeted rehabilitation interventions. A guided movement assessment lab will also be included.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify normal motions, muscle functions, and natural history of the aging shoulder.
- Recognize common shoulder movement deviations and associated pathology.
- Describe common surgical approaches and post-surgical considerations with the aging shoulder.
- Perform a movement assessment for pain in the aging shoulder.
- Select appropriate rehabilitation interventions for the aging shoulder.
