Description

Cultural Conversations at the Center

Thursday, October 3rd, 6:30-8PM African-American Research Library & Cultural Center Free

As we close out Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Paul Ortiz, Professor of History and Director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida, and Nailah Summers, Co-Founder and Communications Director of Dream Defenders, will lead a riveting conversation regarding teaching African American and Latinx inclusion in United States history.

Dr. Ortiz’s latest book, African American and Latinx History of the United States, challenges the traditional narrative of U.S. history and recovers the stories and contributions of Black and Brown people. Dr. Ortiz is also the author of Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Bloody Election of 1920.

AARLCC is committed to creating programs and experiences that will broaden minds and impact lives for the better. With the library as a cultural center and hub within the Black community in Ft. Lauderdale, the series provides a platform to discuss Black history and culture locally and nationally.

Series Details: The Cultural Conversations at the Center series will take place on the first Thursday of every month and feature intellectually stimulating programs with thought and industry leaders, scholars, educators, filmmakers, artists and others whose work celebrates and illuminates known and unknown aspects of Black history and culture.

Upcoming events (first Thursday of the month):
  • November 7th: "Life After Military Service," with Dan Ringo
  • December 5th: "Beyond Rosie the Riveter: Black Women's Participation in WWII," with a discussion and screening of the documentary SixTripleEight
