Description

The Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts presents the 7th Annual Richard Wright Black Tie Gala at the University of the District of Columbia. This red-carpet, black tie affair is an enticing evening of the arts with jazzy, hip-hop,r&b, soulful musical performances; brilliant, student-produced, short films from ROXIE Film Productions; awards ceremony of notable Honorees: an elegant sit down dinner; a colorful silent auction, and so much more! This year's theme is AWAKEN and the festivities will be hosted by 3-time Grammy-nominated RAHEEM DEVAUGHN, with his deeply reflective, soulful insight, the movement continues in his music and his messages. Gala 2018 also features the dynamic musical talents of another Grammy-nominated artist MAIMOUNA YOUSSEF aka Mumu Fresh, recently highlighted on NPR's Little Desk with Common and August Greene.

This year's Honorees include UDC President Ronald Mason; DC's Office of Cable Television, Film, Music & Entertainment Director Angie Gates; NFL Philadelphia Eagles Superbowl Champion Malcolm Jenkins; The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation President Gwendolyn Jenkins; Actor Michael Rainey, Jr.; Entrepreneur and Executive Shauna Small; and East Friendship Baptist Church Senior Pastor Reverend Melvin Maxwell.

It's been a monumental year of challenge and change, but what continues to bear witness to the truth in history is the power of young people to create real change. By learning from and connecting with outstanding changemakers such as this year's notable Honorees, RW students will continue to be the hope for the future. With meaningful educational opportunities, they will make a lasting, positive impact in the world. The Richard Wright students are change agents and content creators making a lasting impression with these powerful short films, in various genre, expressing and provoking a range of emotions within all of us, relatable yet fresh in perspective. We all need to AWAKEN to the power of our youth to make a difference.

The Richard Wright Black Tie Gala 2018 is the biggest fundraiser of the year for this public charter school that is "Rewriting the Future, One Student at a Time." Engaging ATTENDEES, notable HONOREES, delicious FOOD, creative FILMS, sizzling MUSIC, beautiful ART, cutting edge FASHION and DANCE choreography, and a CASH BAR! Truly an evening to remember, and definitely worth your time and investment in one of the most prolific and innovative schools in DC. No, but all seats are the same price regardless of age. A valid ID is needed to purchase alcoholic beverages.

Directions By Metro Rail

The following bus routes go to UDC:

Directions By Car
From Maryland:

  • Take I-495 beltway exit 33 MD-185 s Connecticut Ave towards Chevy Chase continue around roundabout take 4th exit continue on Connecticut Ave then turn right on Van Ness 4.6 miles

From Virgina:

  • Take I-295 North towards DC take 14th Street bridge turn left on I Street then turn right on Connecticut Ave continue on Connecticut Ave then turn left on Van Ness 3.9 miles

Parking is available in the Van Ness Campus Parking Garage (4200 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington, DC 20008) accessed from the Van Ness Street entrance.

Metered parking on the street is also available.
