Event description
"The 78" Racial Equity Town Hall

About this Event

There will be two racial equity town halls regarding "The 78" TIF, each one will build on the outcome from the previous session. Participants should plan on attending both sessions regarding "The 78".

Sat., Nov. 9, 11a – 2p: What are the facts?

Background

In April 2019, Chicago City Council members approved public tax subsidies to redevelop two significant parcels of land: Lincoln Yards and "The 78".

As City Council voted to approve the TIF investments, CUE was asked to facilitate a Racial Equity Impact Assessment by a coalition of organizers, faith leaders, and business owners. The TIF Equity Coalition quickly amassed nearly 1,500 signatures in support of the REIA.

“The 78” is 62 acres of riverfront property between Pilsen, Chinatown, and the South Loop. This area is being redeveloped by Related Midwest with $551 million in tax revenue to offset development costs

At the request of community leaders, Chicago United for Equity is conducting a Racial Equity Impact Assessment (REIA) of this mega development supported by Tax Increment Financing.

Join our public town hall meetings to work alongside other residents to develop recommendations for fairly distributing the benefits and burdens of these developments and how to put racial equity in the center of future decisions about public financing of private development.

We will also be hosting a Final Town Hall that will bring together both Racial Equity Impact Assessments.

Sat., Dec. 7, 11a - 2p: How can we prevent harm and promote public benefits?
