590 The Fan and insideSTL.com are pleased to announce that we will be hosting our Fourth Annual Wiffle Ball Tournament September 25 at Francis Park on the city’s South Side .

For the fourth straight year, radio station hosts, writers, producers, listeners, readers, callers and texters will gather at Francis Park for a round-robin wiffle ball tournament, with portions of the proceeds going to Birdies 4 Bipolar.

Here’s the pertinent info:

Time: Starts at 10 a.m. and runs until the champion is crowned.

Location: Francis Park (Tamm Avenue side of the park at Tamm Avenue and Delor)

Tournament Format: Round-robin group play with winners of the groups advancing to knock-out rounds.

Number of players/cost: Four players per team (Everyone hits. There are two fielders and one pitcher). $150 per team.

NOTE: No outside food or beer is allowed as we will have vendors selling both at the event. Other drinks, such as Gatorade, are allowed.

Tournament Rules

PLAYING EQUIPMENT

Game Balls: Only the white baseball size Wiffle Ball, (eight slots on one side) will be used for play. There will be several balls allotted to each field to keep the game moving. Balls may not be cut, but scuffing is legal.

The Bat: Everyone will use a traditional yellow bat

PLAYING FIELD (These are the rough dimensions. Field sizes may slightly vary.)

Pitcher’s mound: 42 ft. to home plate
Outfield: 85 ft. to right and left field foul poles and approx. 95 ft. to straight center
Infield: Will be marked with a 42 ft. single’s/pitcher’s line, extending from Foul line to Foul line, and a 65 ft. double’s line, also extending from Foul line to Foul line. The diagram below shows the makeup.


RULES

– Strike Zone
– Strike zone is marked with a designated marker in the ground
– Any pitch that hits the strike zone is a strike
– There are no base-runners
– 2 strikes is a strikeout.
– 5 balls is a walk
– Unlimited foul balls
– A Single is any fair ball that touches on or goes beyond the pitching line.
– A Double is any ball that touches on or goes beyond the double line on a fly.
– A Triple is any ball hitting the wall in the air (and not caught). A caught ball off the wall is a Single.
– A Home Run is any ball landing over the home run fence (in fair territory)
– Ground Balls

  • – A ground ball fielded in front of the pitcher line is an Out
  • – Any ball that comes to a complete stop past the infield/pitcher’s line is a Single
  • – Any ball caught on the fly is an out
  • – If the ball is fielded clean for an out and the fielder hits the strike zone it’s a double-play.
