Event description
Join our distinguished speakers in celebration, inclusion, and support of adults with autism in our communities.

About this Event

When children are diagnosed with autism, our nation invests generously in services to help to promote learning and to develop their unique talents and interests. But when children with autism become adults with autism, that help vanishes.

Madison House Autism Foundation established Autism After 21 Day to spotlight the talents, abilities and challenges of adults living with autism. At our annual breakfast, we gather thought leaders, policy makers, elected officials and business leaders in a united effort to shape a more positive future for adults with autism and their families and to advocate for stronger, more inclusive communities.

This year, at our 4th Annual Autism After 21 Day Breakfast at Congressional Country Club, we are calling attention to the vital role supportive housing plays in the lives of adults with autism and related disabilities. We know that a place to live, a supportive community, and opportunities to participate are critical elements for well-balanced, meaningful lives.

In absence of appropriate supportive housing options, most adults with autism will live in their parents’ home until their parents can no longer provide care and shelter. A lack of inclusive planning and careful consideration produces immense personal and familial trauma, significant social costs for our communities, and an inflated economic cost to the state. The failure to acknowledge and respond to these realities ensures that some of these adults will even experience homelessness.

In order to take corrective action, it is vital that we become educated about the unique strengths and struggles that accompany a diagnosis of autism throughout the entire lifespan. Without urgent collective action on the part of communities, policy makers, and employers we will be unable to respond sufficiently to address a growing crisis.

Join us on October 21st. United, we can create more vibrant communities and a better future for the valuable adults who too often go unseen.
