The 2nd Annual Gay Show is an imagining of nightlife through the lens of the performance space. Not just a retelling, but a reliving of a night out for Queer and Trans People of Color. This is an experiment that invites its audience to experience the breadth of queer expression, queer community, queer celebration, and the hopes of queer liberation. This show is for anyone and EVERYONE invested in uplifting queerness, BIPOC artists, and the beauty of working in community with one another.

Every night we're bringing you a different lineup of performers, a new moment you might've missed the night before, and many more surprises we hope will keep you coming again and again! ;)

The 2nd Annual Gay Show is an homage to Very Good Dance Theatre's debut: The 1st Annual Gay Show, which premiered in 2019. With "Gay Show" we again seek to authentically and genuinely present the experiences of Queer and Trans People of Color. Originally, The 1st Annual Gay Show deconstructed a southern beauty pageant to ask its participants: "What have you endured, what is your story, and how has it shaped you?" Now, Very Good Dance Theatre returns to "Gay Show" with a focus on queer nightlife to ask those involved: "Who are you now, and what have you done to shape yourself and your community?"

The 2nd Annual Gay Show is an experimental dance theatre piece that transplants the queer nightlife and queer performance scene into the theatre space. Through this experiment, we seek to immerse the traditional theatre audience into a space, and culture, they may be unfamiliar with and/or may not otherwise ever experience, while also creating a safe space for queer and trans people of the global majority. The purpose of this project is to showcase the talents of the queer community while highlighting the work that this community does and has done toward cultivating spaces for safety, empowerment, trust, and triumph. The 2nd Annual Gay Show asks who we are allowed to be when can stop performing the parts of our identity that aid in safety, and are able to perform the parts of themselves that activate fun, community, expression, and liberation.
