Event Details

On a fundamental level, The Deep South in the Global South (DSGS) conference argues, first and foremost, that the South, in all its various manifestations, plays a vital role in any global conversation.  The South is more than place.  It is a point of connection, a nexus of ideas transcending both geographical and ideological boundaries. 

Schedule of Events (Included in Full Registration Package):

Thursday, April 6th, 2017

  • 3:00pm: Check-in available at Hilton Garden Inn, Lafayette
  • 4:00pm-8:00pm: Registration (Paul and Lulu Hilliard Art Museum)
  • 6:00-8:00pm: Wine and Cheese Opening Reception
    (Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum)
    • Welcoming Remarks by Dr. Farmer-Kaiser, Dean of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Graduate School
    • Special Talk and Artist Presentation featuring Brooke C. White

  • 8:00am: Coffee provided by the Center for Louisiana Studies
  • 9:00am—5:00pm: Registration (Cecil J. Picard Center)
  • 9:00am—5:00pm: Panel Sessions (Cecil J. Picard Center)    
    • 10:45am—12:15pm: Creative Plenary: “Constructing the Souths”
  • 6:00pm—9:00pm: Awards Dinner at the Petroleum Club of Lafayette
    • Graduate Student Travel Awards presented by Dr. Jordan Kellman, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts
    • Keynote Address presented by Dr. Anouar Majid




Saturday, April 8th, 2017
  • 8:00am: Coffee provided by the Center for Louisiana Studies
  • 9:00am—4:00pm: Panel Sessions (Cecil J. Picard Center)
    • 10:45am—12:15pm: Critical Plenary: “Politics of Location”
    • 12:30-1:30: Author Luncheon with John McNally (a free event, please register using Eventbrite)
  • 5:00pm-7:00pm: Closing Reception and DSGS Fundraiser at Jefferson Street Pub*
    • Closing Remarks by Dr. Dayana Stetco, Professor of English and Department Head at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette
    • Featuring The Acadien Cajun Band
*Tickets for the Fundraiser are not included in your regular registration and must be purchased separately. Proceeds will fund graduate student travel grants for the 2018 confernece.

The EGSA’s mission is to assist the English graduate student body in their pursuit of academic achievement, enhance communication between English graduate students and faculty, promote the professional development of graduate students, and to foster a community of camaraderie and professionalism both within the English department and with the Lafayette community as a whole.
