Event Details

The Seacology Prize is an international award given each year to an indigenous islander for exceptional achievement in preserving the environments and cultures of the world’s islands. The Prize highlights the heroic efforts of people who seldom receive any publicity – indigenous leaders who risk their own lives and well-being to help their community and preserve the biodiversity of their home.

We are excited to announce the 2013 Seacology Prize winner!

Marie Saleem is a leading environmental conservation proponent from the Maldives. Together with her husband, she founded Seamarc Pvt Ltd, an environmental consultancy under which they run two Marine Discovery Centers as part of the two Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives, regularly conducts environment awareness classes for school children, works on mitigating coral damage with the help of a coral propagation program, and is involved with the communities of several islands in waste management. Marie Saleem also conducted research on the status of shark fishery in the Maldives which led to a ban on all shark fishing on March 15, 2010 and a subsequent ban of all trade of shark products beginning July 1, 2011. Marie recently worked as part of a team that successfully added seven species of sharks and mantas to the Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species), increasing their protection through monitoring and regulation of trade.
