Event description

Description

During the global 1918-1919 influenza epidemic, an estimated one-third of the world’s population became infected, and of those an estimated 10% died. Mortality rates are often higher among the very old and very young, but in this epidemic, there was also a high mortality rate in healthy individuals between the ages of 20 and 40.

Indianapolis did not escape the epidemic.

William Beck and William McNiece, MD, both of the Marion County Historical Society, will trace the timeline and impact of influenza in Indianapolis in 1918 as reported in newspapers and other local sources.
