Event description

Description

The Explorers Club is proud to play host to the world's largest gathering of explorers, with our 113th Explorers Club Annual Dinner. Honoring the world’s leading explorers and field scientists since 1904, more than 1,200 explorers and guests will gather at New York's historic Ellis Island on March 25th, 2017.

This year, the focus is on COLD PLACES—environments that fundamentally shape our inner spirit, outer limits, and foster human stories that drive us all. This event connects our guests to their passions through risk takers, innovators, and the visionaries of our time—those who persevere through the unthinkable, and shape our perception of what’s possible.

We will honor the outstanding accomplishments of three individuals with The Explorers Club Medal — the most prestigious recognition in exploration — André Borschberg, FI ‘13 & Bertrand Piccard, M.D., FI ‘00 for their solar powered circumnavigation, Solar Impulse, and Nainoa Thompson, FN ‘15, for his historic work on Polynesian wayfinding and the Hōkūleʻa.

Their fellow awardees include: Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita honored with the Tenzing Norgay Award; George Basch, MN '10 with the Citation of Merit; Lee Langan, FN '99 recognized with The Edward C. Sweeney Memorial medal; and Sophie Hollingsworth, SM '14 with our first-ever New Explorer Award.

The extraordinary Sir Ranulph Fiennes MED'79 will be attending as our keynote speaker. Often described as “the world’s greatest living explorer,” we are honored to have him join us.

We hope you will be there, March 25th on Ellis Island, the historic gateway for over 12 million journeys! The evening will feature an awe-inspiring 8-minute ferry ride, views of NYC’s iconic skyline, Explorers Club Flag returns from the field, interactive exploration displays, our famed unique cuisine, all with the glow of Lady Liberty as the backdrop!
