'The 1% Study' is an extense non-profit primary research investigation, in association with the Black Solicitors Network , The Law Society, and the Solicitors Regulation Authority. It uncovers the key contributing factors that have assisted Black solicitors in reaching the partnership level at major law firms in the UK. The report is sponsored by five prominent law firms that are demonstrably invested in the retention and progression of Black talent: DLA Piper; Herbert Smith Freehills; Hogan Lovells; Latham & Watkins; and Linklaters.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority's official statistic that only 1% of Partners (approximately 90 individuals) at major law firms are Black, underlines the urgency with which racial inequity in the legal profession needs to be addressed. Partners at major law firms help shape the fabric of our society. They make decisions that affect access to justice, impact the economy, and they often have a large financial stake in organisations that are critical to the rule of law.

Who are 'The 1%'...? And what can be learned from their collective experiences of career progression to the partnership level? Can we use these actionable learnings to increase the current pace of change, and the worryingly low representation of Black talent at senior levels in private practice?

'The 1% Study' set out 21-months ago to distil the factors that Black Partners attribute to helping them reach the top of the profession and discover evidence-based solutions to encourage greater representation. The research report outlines five key actions law firms can take to retain and progress Black talent to senior levels.

This evidential basis will help to guide law firms on their investments in DE&I solutions to better the attraction, retention, development, and progression of Black talent. Further, the report provides actionable advice points to guide junior Black talent along their career, and Black students aspiring to enter the profession.

'The 1% Study' is an important amplification of the voices of Black excellence within the legal profession. The research highlights patterns and trends from those who have beaten the odds to rise to Partner level at major law firms in the UK.
