Event description

Description

We are thrilled to be partnering with the United Way of Greater Portland and Black Tie Catering to serve another delicious Thanksgiving dinner to our community this year! We have a variety of volunteer positions on Thanksgiving Day. All volunteer positions require the ability to stand for 2+ hours. Volunteers are required to stay until the end of the shift (or until clean up is over).

Volunteer Shifts Available:

Dining Room Set Up Crew, 8:30am-10:30am - Want to lend a hand on Thanksgiving but need to be home for dinner at noon? Come in early and help us put the finishing touches on the dining room and get everything into place before the guests arrive.

Dishwashing Superhero, 10:30am-2pm - Earn a ton of good karma and the never ending gratitude of the event organizers by signing up to be a dishwashing superhero! It's not the most glamorous job, but if you really want to help where it's needed most, this is it! You'll be running the dishwashing machine and working with staff to leave the kitchen as clean as we find it. Superhero capes can be arranged.

Dining Room Greeters, 10:30am-2pm - Keep an eye on all the comings and goings as the dining room greeter. You will be the first point of contact for the guests, welcoming them to our holiday meal! Greet guests as they arrive, oversee the flow of guests to tables and buffet lines, and generally keep things flowing smoothly. Following dinner service, assist with general dining room clean up.

Census Takers, 10:30-2pm - Help Wayside get a head count on the number of guests and track some basic demographic information during dinner. Collecting this information helps us tell a more complete story about our meal and who we are serving to funders and program supporters. Following dinner, volunteers will help pitch in with clean up.

Table Hosts, 10:30am-2pm - Are you the host with the most? Do you want to get to know the folks we are serving? This position is a great way to engage with the guests and make them feel welcome on such an important day. Volunteers will be assigned to one table, where they will take drink orders from guests, refill water pitchers, replenish bread and butter, and reset place settings. Table hosts are also in charge of Thanksgiving thoughtfulness, handing out comment cards and encouraging/helping guests to record what they are thankful for. Following dinner service, the table host is responsible for cleaning his/her table and breaking it down.

Buffet Servers, 10:30am-2pm - Mad for mashed potatoes? Better off with butternut? Whatever your dish, you'll serve it with a smile, coordinating with the kitchen to ensure a continuous flow of food. Following dinner service, buffet servers will take charge of cleaning and breaking down the buffet line.

Bussers, 10:30am-2pm - Volunteers will assist the table hosts to help clear and reset tables as guests leave and new ones arrive. Volunteers will pitch in to help clean up the dining room following dinner service.

Drink Station Attendants, 10:30am-2pm - Help keep people hydrated and caffeinated! Make coffee, pour apple cider and fill drink orders for the table hosts. Volunteers will be responsible for cleaning up the drink station following service.

Dessert Servers, 10:30am-2pm - Major sweet tooth? This could be the spot for you. Cut and serve pies and desserts, explaining options to guests. Volunteers will be responsible for cleaning up the dessert station following service.
