Thabisa

THABISA creates a sophisticated blend of African soul, jazz, and original music that has madeher an “artist to watch” in South Africa. Her electrifying performances and velvet voice leave audiences wanting more. Thabisa has achieved a great deal in her young career, with two highly acclaimed albums, a national tour, and numerous appearances at festivals, on morning TV shows, and in local gigs. Thabisa has been highlighted in a range of publications, including The Daily Sun, Good Housekeeping Magazine, Destiny Magazine, and more.

Thabisa welcomes you into her heart with her inviting lyrics and diverse sounds. She incorporates Xhosa, Zulu, Venda, and English languages into her music and celebrates the diversity and beauty of ordinary South Africans. Her second album Eyodidi (2015), meaning ‘one of a kind’, speaks to people of all ages and backgrounds, touching their ears and hearts with words of encouragement and inspiration. Thabisa’s first album The Journey (2013) takes us on a ride through her early days as an aspiring artist, trying to find her way and her voice in an often complex world.

Thabisa’s story begins in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, where she developed a love for singing in church and school. Growing up, she was known among family andfriends as “Little Brenda”, for Brenda Fassie, and could always be found singing and dancing outside her home. She was introduced to the music industry in 2002 when she entered the popular talent search competition, Coca Cola Pop Stars, at the age of 19.

During those early years, she worked with many musicians from a wide range of genres. These artists include Thandiswa Mazwai, Caiphus Simenya, Bebe and Cece Winans, and Freshly Ground, all of whom inspired her to experiment with new sounds and find her voice. She often shared the stage with renowned artists, from Zonke at The Heritage Day Music Festival to Ringo at The Wild Coast Cultural Festival.

In 2012, Thabisa entered the national singing competition, Idols South Africa, and finished in the Top 20. The following year, she relocated to Johannesburg to further her career. She made appearances on morning TV shows, performed at Pata Pata in Maboneng and at Open Room Studios in Greenside, and headlined at the groundbreaking ceremony for the African School for Excellence. Thabisa received a nomination for Best Video at the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) for her song “Vula” off her first album The Journey.
