Description

Testa Produce

Testa Produce is a 105-year-old family-owned and operated produce distributor. They serve restaurants, hotels, schools, country clubs, sporting arenas and hospitals from Wisconsin to central Illinois. Testa's LEED-Platinum refrigerated food service facility designed by Epstein was the first of its kind in the U.S. The warehouse features sustainable technologies including a 750-kilowatt wind turbine and solar panels that together produce an average of 35 percent of the building’s energy needs. Testa Produce also has a solar thermal hot water system for heating water; an extensive system that recovers rainwater for non-potable purposes; LED lighting and skylighting; a vegetated roof; and compressed natural gas (CNG) and bio-diesel delivery trucks.

BEHIND THE SCENES

RSVP Required: Tour the distribution warehouse where produce and packaged foods are received and sorted. Weather permitting, step onto the green roof to get a closer look at one of the few full-size wind turbines in Chicago—plus an uninterrupted view of the skyline.

All visitors to this site must register in advance and bring a valid photo ID. Names of all guests must be provided at time of registration. Capacity is very limited and will fill rapidly. There is no waitlist and reservations are final.

Visitors must not wear open-toed shoes or jewelry. A hat or hairnet (provided) must be worn, and a jacket or sweater may be desirable.
