TERRA COTTA, STONE REPAIR AND HISTORIC MORTARS WORKSHOP
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2011
8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
We invite you to join us for a special full-day workshop program at our Plainville Training Center. Our program includes a series of presentations, demonstrations and hands-on workshop exercises designed to explain and illustrate current best practices for masonry repair, repointing and architectural coating. This is a non-commercial program and has been pre-registered with AIA Continuing Education System for 7 HSW LU’s.
- Session 1. Terra Cotta & Stone Repair
Expert instructor John Harry will demonstrate the techniques and approaches required to achieve both esthetic excellence and high durability in repairs to stone and terra cotta. Participants will have an opportunity to try their hands at patching, profiling and finishing using a range of repair materials, glazes and finishes. Chemical Engineer Michael Edison will discuss repair system formulation and performance. Advanced topics include discussion of the importance of proper work sequencing and issues revolving around working on saturated terra cotta buildings.
- Session 2. Masonry Mortars & Repointing
Do you know the differences between modern and historic mortars? Between hydrated lime, hydraulic
lime and lime putty? Between masonry cement, portland cement and natural cement? Do you know
where and when each of these is appropriate? Chemical engineer Michael Edison will explain these
materials, how they work and how they are properly combined with other ingredients to make masonry
mortars. Demonstrations will illustrate preparation of various types of mortars and how to avoid potential errors in mortar proportioning. Applicable ASTM standards and historic repointing guidelines will be discussed.
Group size will be limited, to assure a meaningful workshop experience. Advance registration is required. Registration fees cover partial cost of instructors, materials, tools, course notes, refreshments and lunch.
