Tenth Annual Latino Education Conference

Robert Treat Conference Center

Newark, New Jersey

Educators: October 15, 2013: 9am-4pm

Parents/Students: October 16, 2013: 9am-4pm

This year, the conference will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Disciplines (STEM).

The event will feature workshops, seminars, and presentations on education issues affecting the education of Latino children. A series of workshops will emphasize the value of math and science as the basis for future success. In addition, workshops providing empowerment skills for parents will be presented.

Last year, the conference attracted over 1,000 parents, teachers, principals and other interested individuals. The conference program is characterized by its high energy and the commitment of parents and educators for the betterment of public education. In addition to the program, the event features exhibitors, cultural presentations, and Latino folkloric dance groups.

The conference program starts with a formal breakfast on Tuesday October 15th. The invited keynote speaker is Dr. Charles Mitchel, Associate Dean, and Executive Director of the Academy of Urban School Transformation and the Institute for International Schools, Seton Hall University. Dr. Mitchell is a renowned and remarkable motivational speaker. The luncheon features the annual ‘Nuestros Niños” Award presentation.

A “Master” 3-hour workshop session will be presented on Tuesday by Dr. Juan A. Aparicio, Aida Margarita Hernández, Chief Educator, and Viviana van Vliet, Curator of the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico. They will present the “Science and Mathematics at the Museum” project, a professional development course which instructs teachers on how to use art to teach math and science subjects. The project equips teachers with a unique portfolio of powerful utilitarian tools and techniques.

The second day is dedicated to parents and features important messages analyzing the state of public education, and parental empowerment sessions.

As last year, the conference will include the participation of parents coming directly from Mexico to present one of the workshops. The parent and teacher are the first place winners of the prestigious “Concurso Nacional sobre Estrategias de Participación Social para una Escuela Mejor”. The “concurso” is a national contest on parental involvement which covers all states in Mexico and is hosted by the Alianzas Educativas organization (www.alianzaseducativas.org) and the Mexico Ministry of Education.

Parents and college students participate free of costs, there is a modest fee for teachers.
