Free Tennessee History Highlights Teacher Workshop to take place at the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday, September 30, 2017

The East Tennessee Historical Society has partnered with Humanities Tennessee to offer the Tennessee History Highlights teacher workshop across the state, hosted in your community by the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum at Lincoln Memorial University.

This hands-on workshop will feature activities that cover content from the 4th, 5th, 8th, and 11th grade American History curriculum standards. These major events and people from Tennessee's story will be featured:

  • Fort Loudoun Massacre

  • Watauga Settlement and Purchase

  • Tennessee Frontier Characters such as Little Carpenter, Dragging Canoe, John Sevier, Richard Henderson, James Robertson, and William Brownlow

  • Battle of Kings Mountain

  • Lincoln’s Presidency, Tennessee, and the Civil War

  • Tennessee Civil War characters such as David G. Farragut, Horace Maynard, Andrew Johnson, Felix Zollicoffer, John McCline, and Mary A. Hansard

  • The Great Depression and the New Deal

The workshop is structured around student-tested, inquiry-based activities; activities which are designed to enrich the learning experience and teach key literacy skills. Key primary and secondary sources will be featured throughout the day. Specifically, teachers will experience best practices for using these types of primary sources in the classroom:

  • Text documents

  • Maps

  • Illustrations and graphics

  • Artifacts

  • Museum programs and classroom outreach

Educational programming and resources offered by the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum will be featured throughout the day.

The workshop for Tennessee teachers will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2017, in the Daughters of the Union boardroom of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum from 9:00am until 3:00pm. Lunch will be provided, as will a small stipend for travel. A Certificate of Participation will also be given to participating teachers at the end of the workshop.
