Event description

Description

What is a ghost sign...

"A ghost sign is an old hand-painted advertising signthat has been preserved on a building for an extended period of time. The sign may be kept for its nostalgic appeal, or simply indifference by the owner."

Come learn about San Francisco's handpainted historic signs in the heart of the Tenderloin! We'll meet at the Powell Street Cable Car turnaround, wind our way up to California and Polk, and then wind our way back down again, visiting some of San Francisco's best ghost signs and other sites of historic interest along the way. The tour is about two hours long so bring good walking shoes and water. Tour happens rain or shine.

Founded in 2011, the San Franciso Ghost Sign Mapping Project is a project by artist Kasey Smith to catalogue, map, and research the locations of San Francisco's historic hand painted signs. Including documenting any changes in their status such as when they're restored, removed, or demolished. The map can be viewed at https://sfghostsigns.com/
