Event Details

Returning to Ashkenaz after a three-year absence, Tempest is in its 25th year, led by Lief Sorbye singing and playing his mandolins, guitars, and custom-built “mando-guitar.” This show features new songs and old favorites. Along with Sorbye, Tempest is drummer Adolfo Lazo, fiddler Kathy Buys, electric guitarist Greg Jones, and electric bassist Caith Threefires. A native of Oslo, Norway, Sorbye was already a musician when he discovered the Incredible String Band, busked around Europe and across America, ended up in Ireland where he added jigs and reels, then settled in Oakland, where he’s lived ever since when not on endless concert tours. In 1979 he encountered multi-instrumentalist Paul Espinoza and Celtic harper Margie Butler atSan Francisco’s Plough and Stars pub doing Incredible String Band covers, and the three joined to form the well-known Celtic folk band Golden Bough. He left in 1988 to go electric and play Celtic rock more in the tradition of Jethro Tull and has led Tempest ever since, along with his unplugged version, Caliban, and occasional Golden Bough reunions.

Tribal folk rockers Pandemonaeon blend a driving rock sound with the delicate beauty of folk instruments. Mandolin, acoustic guitar, and dumbek weave together with electric guitars, keyboards, and a strong rhythm section to create an atmospheric sound reminiscent of a harder-edged Dead Can Dance. The group’s sound has been described by one fan as “music for belly dancers in combat boots.” Founded by a guitarist with a penchant for unusual chords and a vocalist enchanted by Celtic melancholy, Pandemonaeon creates soundscapes both modern and timeless by combining Middle Eastern, Scandinavian, and Celtic folk influences with modern rock stylings. At times haunting and stark, at times driving and passionate, the result is deeply evocative. Sharon Knight sings and plays octave mandolin, acoustic guitar, and percussion, with Winter on guitar and vocals, bassist-keyboardist Caith Threefires, singer Paul Nordin, and drummer Mark Abbott.
