What craft questions do we need to consider when we begin a story with "I"? How do these questions differ from those we have when we tell stories about a main character who is referred to as “he” or “she”? In this workshop, we will explore the fundamental techniques of first-person narration in fiction and creative nonfiction, in addition to other craft elements such as plot, structure, characterization, point-of-view, dialogue, and style. Sessions will include generative writing exercises, short lectures and discussions on various craft elements, and, most importantly, reviewing of story drafts with our fellow workshop participants. While this workshop will refer to literary short stories and essays as models, participants may choose to submit works in any genre, including but not limited to memoir, creative nonfiction, personal essay, science fiction, mystery, and young adult fiction.
