TEFO X Chris Cooper Educational Drama Lab (4 days)

**A minimum group size of 12 is needed to launch the lab.
**Please register by 22/6 (Friday) if you are interested!

Process Drama, Conventional Approach to drama and Theatre-in-Education are common techniques in drama education practice. Each approach serves particular educational objectives and creates different learning experiences. TEFO plans to invite Chris Cooper, the known British drama and education expert, to facilitate a four-day educational drama laboratory workshop. The laboratory aims to create a co-learning platform for exploring the characteristics of the above-mentioned three educational drama genres through practice.

** TEFO would like to ensure that there are enough participants before we confirm to launch the lab. Interested practitioners are invited to register online on or before June 22, 2018. Once the lab is confirmed, TEFO will notify you regarding the payment arrangement. **

Over the four days, Chris will lead the participants to:
- Experience how three educational drama genres, including Living Through Approach, Conventional Approach, and Theatre-in-Education will be applied using the same set of materials;
- Study the relationship, similarities and differences of these three genres;
- Explore the key concepts on Bondian approach to drama (such as center, site, extreme, theatre event, nothingness, invisible object, etc.)

【Lab Overview】
Day 1: Experience a "Process Drama (Living Through Apporach)"
Participants are invited to take part in a living through drama and experience the "metaxis" effect mentioned by Gavin Bolton and David Davis. The purpose in this phase is to build a common experience and language for the further discussion in the following workshops.

Day 2: Experience the same drama context through “Conventional Approach”
Participants will go through the same dramatic material in the first day by applying "Conventional Approach". Drama experience will be re-structured in a distanced dramatic framework. Different conventions will be used to connect the story. Compare to the learning experience in the previous day, participants will investigate how these two genres created different learning experience. This phase aims to help participants explore critically the features of using Conventional Approach in drama education.

Day 3: Devise a TIE play by using the same dramatic material
Based on the first day experience, Chris will organise a TIE script for the third day. Using the script, participants will explore the Bondian approach to drama, such as the concepts of invisible objects, extreme, site, center, theatre event, nothingness and other key Bondian concepts. From the perspective of actor-teacher in TIE, the participants will look into and discuss the differences in these three genres.

Day 4: Compare the experience of three different techniques
On the last day, participants will compare three different approaches in drama education. Through the group discussion and reflection, Chris will lead the group to think about a new educational drama/theatre approach proposed by David Davis in his book “Imagining the Real”.
