Event description

Description

This Teen Poverty Seminar is a part of Asbury Youth Group's local mission trip in Kankakee that is open to the public. Participants must be ages 12-18, but adult leaders are welcome to observe the simulation and panel discussion. For this mission opportunity, Asbury Youth Group is partnering with ACOM, Inc., a social service agency in Kankakee that takes a wholistic approach to ending poverty in the community. ACOM, Inc. was recently honored with the Inspire Award from Provena St. Mary's for their efforts.

This seminar will include a panel discussion on child and teen poverty in Kankakee County. Attendees will then participate in a Poverty Simulation where they will be grouped into families in poverty, each fullfilling different roles and making different choices to help manage their situation. In this simulation, participants will learn what it is like for a person in poverty to seek help from social service agencies, work with schools, and face unwise and even illegal activities as means of coping.
