Adolescence is an unsettling time for our young people; being able to discern what is normal and abnormal adolescent development is important. You will learn about the causes of mood disorders including depression and their manifestations and biological and familial factors. Identification of the signs and symptoms of distress and various episodes of depression, hypomania, bipolar and dysthymia disorders will heighten our clinical knowledge. As risks increase, we find that teen suicide has become a serious problem. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. for ages 10-34. Learn about the basic facts, risk factors, situational triggering, stages of suicide, and assessment and various treatment approaches.
