Event description

Description

Do you have what it takes to give a TEDx talk? Is it on your wish list, but fear and doubt hold you back? Do you have an idea worth spreading -- but you don't know how to get onto the TEDx stage?

What if you had the chance to take your TEDx talk out for a test drive, to see if it works?

TEDxWilmington has showcased 461 speakers who gave 439 TEDx talks at 31 different events over seven years which as of October 2, 2018 had collectively attracted a record thirteen million nine hundred and ninety eight thousand and nine hundred and thirteen (13,998,913) views from around the world. For every speaker we invited, we declined between 2 and 3 other applicants. After analyzing the reasons for declining so many applications, the TEDxWilmington tribe decided to organize four quarterly Open Mic and Speaker Auditions per year to help potential speakers share their Ideas Worth Spreading and get feedback before they applied again.

Well, now you have that chance!

Join the TEDxWilmington tribe under the leadership of Ajit Mathew George, Executive Producer and Dana Dobson who is producing this TEDxWilmington Workshop on Wednesday, November 7 to try out your TEDx talk, and at the same time, audition for 2019? Here's how it works:

  • You'll be on a real stage, on a real red circle, wearing a real lapel mic, giving a talk up to 15 minutes in length. Come prepared! Your time slot is 20 minutes.
  • We're taking two videos with three cameras -- which you get to keep. This is the same video team who tapes all of the speakers at TEDxWilmington events. First, you'll tell us your idea worth spreading in two minutes or less, and then do your talk up to 15 minutes. We'll send you the two videos later via YouTube.
  • Some members all-volunteer TEDxWilmington tribe will be in the audience curating your talk and filling out evaluations of your talk. After the event, we will mail you the evaluations, which will tell you what we thought was great, and what you could improve.
  • Enjoy a brown bag lunch session, conducted by Ajit George and Dana Dobson and other members of the TEDxWilmington tribe, answering all of your TEDx questions.

Depending on how prepared you are, and whether you have an idea worth spreading, you may receive an invitation to give a TEDx talk at a TEDxWilmington event in 2019, subject to TED renewing our license!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m.?

This hour is for people who want to stand on the red circle and give a one- to two-minute summary of their "idea worth spreading. There is no cost for this opportunity. It will not be video taped. Only 10 spots are available, first-come, first served. We welcome you to spend the day with us as an observer and member of the audience but you will not be able to attend the brown bag lunch session

Does my talk need to be memorized?

The TEDxWilmington Workshop is a simulation of an actual TEDxWilmington event. Your talk IS NOT a TEDx talk as it not being delivered at an official TEDxWilmington event. For best results your talk should be fully memorized and rehearsed for an engaging presentation. Your talk cannot exceed 15 minutes (less is better). No do-overs! We are now limiting most speakers at TEDxWilmington events to 10 minutes.

May I use PowerPoint slides?

Yes but not necessary. We will send you guidelines after you sign up.

Are there two videos?

Yes. Your first video is a one- to two-minute video in which you summarize your idea worth sharing. Later, when you submit your official application for a TEDxWilmington event in 2019 or any other TEDx event, you may submit this video if you wish. The other video is of you doing your 15-minute-or-less talk.

When will I receive my video tapes and speaker evaluations?

You will get the speaker evaluations within a week. Please allow at least four weeks to receive the links to your two videos on YouTube.

How many speaker slots are available?

There are 21 slots available for the TEDxWilmington Workshop - Open Mic and Speaker Auditions. We expect these to go fast, so register as early as you can!
