On Saturday, May 3rd, 2014, 700 people will convene for the 4th annual TEDxConcordiaUPortland event. This full day, independently organized licensed TED event brings together innovative thought leaders and eager community members to share an experience comprised of presentations, performances and discussions. In addition, your ticket includes a light breakfast, snacks, beverages and lunch provided by local suppliers and a handful of Portland’s finest food carts. You’ll have opportunities throughout the day to discuss ideas with attendees and speakers during action breaks and pick-up a range of goodies and give-aways from local sponsors.
Over the course of the day, you will hear from approximately 15 live speakers who will present their inspiring ideas related to this year’s event theme, “Pulse.” Our theme this year highlights the idea that all human creativity ascends from the pulse—whether the beat of a heart or the ebb and flow of innovation, from the swing of a pen across paper to the cadence of a thoughtful conversation, this is where ideas begin.
This year's event brings together creative leaders and world-changers with messages that are personal, alive, and enlightening. Share the day with us learning and connecting with your TEDx community. Breathe. Listen. Come discover new ideas and feel our community’s pulse.
Who is TED? Will TED be there?
Well, TED is not a person. TED is an acronym for “Technology, Entertainment, and Design” which were the three main themes of the original TED conference in 1984. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized, licensed events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. There might be some TED staff at our event and several of our planning team members have attended TED events and collaborated with the TED staff.
How do I choose which speakers to see?
We have approximately 15 speakers and they are so incredible we wouldn’t want you to miss any of them! Instead, the day is broken into four sessions that everyone will attend. In each session, a group of speakers will share their ‘ideas worth spreading’ in talks that are 18 minutes or less (in line with TED rules). This way, every attendee will get to see every speaker’s talk. We’ll also be showing a few of our favorite TED Talks throughout the day. Our speakers will be announced throughout January and February 2014 and you can find information about each of them on our website!
What will I do in between sessions?
Listening to the speakers is only part of the excitement of the day. In between each session you’ll have the chance to participate in our ‘action breaks’. Action breaks provide a variety of engaging activities to allow you to connect with speakers, partners, and other attendees.
What if I want to talk more to the speakers or learn more about their ‘idea worth spreading’?
We want you to have the opportunity to do this too! Like you, our speakers will be spending the whole day with us. Feel free to chat with them during breaks! Additionally, we’ve created TEDxConcordiaUPortland Adventures to allow you to continue the conversation. Adventures are unique and intimate events, designed to offer our TEDx community unparalleled, behind-the scenes access to the people and places that make the local area so dynamic. We will be hosting Adventures each month leading up to the big event in May that you can sign up for here.
What do I need to bring?
You only need to bring yourself and an open mind as you spend the day listening to new ideas and inspiring stories! A light breakfast, snacks, lunch and beverages (coffee, tea, soda, water, etc.) are provided during breaks and are included in the cost of your ticket! There is also a section dedicated to note-taking in your program pamphlet so you might want to bring a pen!
Do you offer refunds?
Tickets are non-refundable/non-transferable, so please, carefully consider the date of the event and consult your calendar before confirming your purchase. We hope this does not cause too much inconvenience, but as a small event team, we do not have the infrastructure to support this sort of administrative task prior to the event.
Most importantly, will there be coffee?
YES! We know 8am on a Saturday morning is early to start talking about BIG ideas. We’ll have locally sourced coffee flowing all day to keep you energized!
When & Where
What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxMtHood, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxMtHood event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
What is TEDxMtHood?
It’s an independently organized and licensed offshoot of TED, you know, the huge speaking event with “ideas worth spreading”. The event where they provide a way for us to hear great ideas from thinkers who have an idea that is changing the world. The one where amazing individuals are giving an 18-minute or less “talk of a lifetime”.
We hold a big annual event in the spring of each year with approximately 15 live speakers and several performers for 800+ attendees and TEDx Adventures throughout the year for more intimate, hands-on opportunities to interact with our speakers and their ideas worth spreading.
