Designed for technologists, designers and journalists, TechRaking: Starting the News will explore the intersection of journalism innovation, community information needs and the entrepreneurship required to drive both forward. The news ecosystem is evolving rapidly, with social and mobile networks reshaping the relationship between newsrooms and audiences. Innovative practices have brought much deeper engagement in critical stories at the local, national and international level, and there are more sources and platforms than ever. So why is it still so economically challenging for news organizations to sustain themselves?
On the first day of the event, we will look at important examples of emerging revenue models for the news and investigate key community issues that challenge traditional assumptions about the role of journalism in a democratic society.
Attendees will have a chance to “hack” a solution to a presented challenge on the second day, which will be informed by our conversations and findings on day one.
